Over the weekend I taught a class on Sunday morning – it was a Power Yoga class.
I love teaching on Sunday mornings. There seems to be a special quietness and tranquility in the room on Sunday mornings, creating space for real brightness to blossom within each person.
As I sat down on my mat, in front of the mirror and array of students who had come to practice, I felt like all my tension had flown away – like my tension was as flighty as the pigeons are when Violet and I walk by. (Violet is my puppy, and she loves to stop, stare, and then run barking at the pigeons!)
I invited each person to find a comfortable place within themselves as well, to take a step back from the surface of the mind and body, into their interior structure of support.
As it was a Power Yoga class, I thought to myself – “So, what is power without tension? What does it mean to be powerful when I feel so at ease?”
Then I remembered that in Yoga, Power doesn’t come from forces of stress. It is not caught in our “small self.” The Powerful Self in Yoga is beyond stories of anger, feelings of selfishness, and actions of harm.
And, we find that Powerful Self by going beyond the surface of our mind and body, and taking a deeper seat. From here, and only here, can we reach the heights of our strength and expression of our fullest power.
Yoga provides us the opportunity to wring out the tensions that cause “what’s wrong” and step into the power that keeps us strong.
Have you stepped into your Practice yet this week?
